EMPURAU "KING OF FISH RIVER"
Empurau
fish (Tor Tambroides) or kelah also known as Wang
Bu Liao (Do
Not Forget Me). Empurau one of the Kelah species but the difference
between empurau and kelah is long lobes there is a surplus under his
mouth. The
main Habibat empurau in Sarawak is in Kapit, Belaga, Limbang and
Lawas. These fish usually breed in fresh water clean without sediment
with a rocky riverbed. This fish also requires a quiet habitat to
breed because it is so sensitive to contamination. In its natural
habitats in the cool, fast and clean waters of the Malaysian upstream
of major rivers, empurau feeds on fruits like engkabang, dabai, ensurai, fig and kepayang and small crustaceans, being
omnivorous.
The texture of the meat is also very different from other species of freshwater fish such as carp tent, carp, tilapia, and catfish. The best way to enjoy it is to steam tenderness together soy sauce, ginger and scallions young. It contained detached easily from the bone and the essence of ginger and onions will enhance the flavor of fresh-water fish, and of course nutrition empurau contains omega-3 bearing helps secrete acid Eikosapentaeonik (EPA) and Dcosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) in the human body.
However
empurau population are dwindling as a result of hunting by
anglers, fishers and others contributed to the extinction of empurau
caused of the high demand and price and the development aspects also disrupt fish habitat. Over fishing will
lead empurau the most expensive freshwater fish in Malaysia would
have died a day later.
To overcome this problem, the Federal Government has approved an allocation of RM4.5 million in April 2011 for the research empurau, a kind of freshwater fish are endangered in the state. The state government also has taken the initiative and proactive steps to release about 5000 empurau at the local area that has the appropriate ecosystem as kelapang river at Ulu Baram.
However

"Tagal" system in Sarawak where the villagers themselves
guard and protect their empurau in their rivers and now the fish
population has recovered in the wild in the states where the fish has
